Organic Farming Vermicompost

Organic farming has various potential including soil fertility re-storage, sustainable agricultural produce, biodiversity maintenance, food security and economic benefit to the marginal farmers. Organic farming is a solution to global food security and sustainable development. The international organizations are involved for policy development for cost-effective and sustainable strategies for stable food production. Therefore, the needs of environment friendly and ecologically sustainable alternative have been realized. Organic fertilizers are always considered more sustainable practice of agriculture rather than chemical fertilizers.

Vermicompost is stable, fine granular organic manure, which enriches soil quality by improving its physicochemical and biological properties. It is highly useful in raising seedlings and for crop production. It helps in increasing the soil water retention capacity of soil. Microbial activity in worm castings is 10 to 20 times higher than that in the normal soil and organic matter that the worm ingests. Further addition of vermicompost to soil attracts deep-burrowing earthworms already present in the soil.

Vermicompost is becoming popular as a major component of organic farming system. The major challenge is to shift towards organic supplements and curbs the chemicals used in agriculture for a better and healthy environment.
